As our members in the Northern Hemisphere now enjoy long summer days, we reflect on the 2012 heli ski season highlights. Winter played a few games with us last season, with snowfalls erratic across both sides of the Atlantic. However Total Heliski managed to run several Member Tours and many clients embarked on their dream winter holiday all over the Northern Hemisphere, including the mighty Himalayas.
Everyone inside and outside of British Columbia, Canada has been talking about La Nina and the epic snow falls in Canada over the past two seasons. This has been at a time when some other locations (like mainland USA) have been noticeably more sparse. With scores of heli and catski operators in Canada, you are spoiled for choice, another reason why Total Heliski are here to help you weed through the options.
But did you know that the secret to this bottomless powder in some operator locations may have had the helping hand of modern science? And what does this mean for the future of powder skiing?
At Total Heliski, we spend a lot of time reinforcing to our clients and members that heli skiing really is not just for experts. The aspects and terrain that you ski will be similar to what you find off-piste in resorts, only accessed by a helicopter, allowing you to ski seemingly endless fresh tracks guaranteed.
However, it goes without saying that heli skiing is also the ultimate experience for expert skier and snowboarders, and we have several opportunities to offer those who seek the steep and deeps later this season.
The Himalayas have long been known around the world as the home of the highest peak in the world – Mount Everest. But they also comprise of a number of other high mountains, all of which make the range one of the most daunting in the world. Consider this: The highest peak outside Asia stands at just under 23,000 feet while the Himalayas alone have over 100 peaks in excess of 23,500 feet! The Himalayas have thus created a natural barrier that has resulted in a unique culture in these high hills.
Are you wondering where your next (or first) big heli ski experience is going to be? The answer could be in – wait for it – the weather channel! Seriously! Ocean currents and surface temperatures could really spice up your heli skiing trip this season. This is all about the phenomena called La Niña of course.

The annual 2011 City Ski Championships take place from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th March in Courmayeur, Valle d’Aosta Italy where the snow has been plentiful this season.
Up to 200 skiers from over 40 City firms will experience a full itinerary of skiing, guiding, coaching, racing, dining on & off the mountain, partying and prize-giving in a programme of friendly competition.
